Richmond, VA — The Virginia House Democratic Caucus released the following statement in response to Cardinal News reports showing Virginia’s GDP growth plummeting from 6.2% to 1.7%, job losses in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, and one of the lowest economic growth rates in the country, all due to President Trump’s policies.
“Since Donald Trump took office, House Democrats have sounded the alarm on his reckless economic agenda that would cost Virginians jobs, stunt our growth, and drive up costs. Every single one of those warnings has come true – all because of Trump’s failed policies and Virginia Republicans’ refusal to stand up to him.
“Virginia Republicans, from the Governor to members of the House GOP, have been derelict in their sworn duty to protect Virginians’ livelihoods and our economy. They are the party of less jobs, higher costs, and more chaos.
“House Democrats, alongside Abigail Spanberger and Senate Democrats, are committed to working across the aisle to get Virginia’s economy back on track. We’ll work with anyone who’s serious about creating jobs, lowering costs, and standing up to Trump’s reckless policies. Our focus will always be on protecting the people of the Commonwealth.”
According to Cardinal News: the three reports come from the Brookings Institution, Old Dominion University’s Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy and the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. All three cite the same thing for this sour economic outlook — President Donald Trump’s policies, which have reduced federal employment and increased tariffs, both of which have hit Virginia uniquely hard because many of Virginia’s jobs have been tied to the federal government and beyond that the state has a trade-based economy.
