RICHMOND, VA – Today, landmark bills introduced by House Democrats to reaffirm the right to contraception in Virginia were signed into law by Governor Spanberger. Right to Contraception Act (HB6) codifies the right to contraception and protects Virginians’ ability to access birth control and make personal medical decisions without government interference. The Contraception Equity Act (HB1182) removes barriers to contraceptive drugs and devices by requiring insurance coverage.
“Signing HB6 into law sends a clear message that decisions about reproductive healthcare and contraception belong to Virginians – not politicians,” said Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price, Patron of HB6. “This law affirms a fundamental right, protects access to essential reproductive healthcare, and ensures Virginians can make deeply personal decisions about their bodies without fear of government intrusion.”
“Contraceptive healthcare is essential, life-changing treatment, and requiring insurers to cover it is common sense,” said Delegate Josh Thomas, Patron of HB1182. “The Right to Contraception Act and the Contraception Equity Act take critical steps towards ensuring contraception is within reach of all Virginians.”
