RICHMOND – House Democratic Caucus Executive Director Trevor Southerland issued the following statement on House Republicans’ pathetic attempts to mislead voters and mask their egregious dereliction of duty during the special session on gun violence.
“From the time that the Governor announced the special session on gun violence prevention, House Republican leadership opposed the entire premise of the session every step of the way, despite the one thousand Virginians who die from gun violence every year.
“Yesterday, Democrats came to Richmond to do the jobs their constituents elected them to do. Republicans abandoned their responsibilities, and despite Democrats’ objections, adjourned after just ninety minutes without considering a single bill.
“Not a single bill introduced by legislators of either party will come before the House of Delegates for full consideration until November – after the elections – because House Republicans are too scared of voters and too loyal to the gun lobby to do their jobs.
“House Republicans may not want to vote on anything, but Virginians will this November.”
