RICHMOND—The Virginia House of Delegates has approved Senate Joint Resolution 1 ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment. This makes Virginia the 38th state to ratify the ERA, allowing it to become the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The House Democratic Caucus released the following statement regarding today’s historic vote:
“We are proud to be the state providing the final vote needed to ensure that women are granted equal protection under the Constitution,” said Kate Sarna, Press Secretary for the House Democratic Caucus. “Women deserve equal protection under the law, and Virginia enthusiastically takes this step to get there.”
The House of Delegates previously agreed to House Joint Resolution 1, with the same language. Quotes from members following passage of HJR1 can be found here: https://www.vahousedems.org/2020/01/15/virginia-house-democrats-celebrate-vote-to-ratify-the-era-in-the-virginia-house-of-delegates/
