BREAKING: VA House Dems Respond to Governor’s Unprecedented 233 Budget Amendments
April 9, 2024
Richmond, VA – Late last night, just ahead of the April 8th, 11:59 PM deadline, Governor Youngkin submitted the remaining action items sent to him by the General Assembly last month. In addition to signing or vetoing remaining legislation, he submitted an unprecedented 233 amendments to the bipartisan budget. The General Assembly has one week to review each of his actions ahead of their reconvene session, April 17th, when they will vote on each amendment.
“When we passed our bipartisan budget last month, we were proud of the work we had done to reach across the aisle and ensure the budget met the needs of each Virginian,” said Speaker Don Scott. “We knew that the Governor might not see eye-to-eye on how those needs are met, and we anticipated some line-item vetoes, but this is an attempt to rewrite the budget. He doesn’t get to do that. We finished this legislative session on time, and we’re going to continue to do the work of the people with that same spirit and efficiency.”
“Governor Youngkin all but vetoed the budget with his amendments,” said Majority Leader Charniele Herring. “Our job is to review and vote. We will continue to work to ensure that the budget works for all Virginians.”
Democratic Caucus Chair, Delegate Tran said, “This budget presents an opportunity for us to work together for the people of the Commonwealth. As we review the Governor’s amendments, we will do so with the intention of continuing our work to keep moving Virginia forward for everyone.”
“I am incredibly proud of the work that we did in the House to put forth a budget that works for all Virginia families. The General Assembly’s bi-partisan budget is one that delivers for all of our constituents across the Commonwealth,” said Appropriations Chair, Delegate Luke Torian. “Once we’re done working through the Governor’s amendments, I’m confident we’ll still be able to say we’ve come through for Virginia.”
