BREAKING: VA House Dems Release Statement on Anniversary of Dobbs Decision Leak
May 2, 2024
Two years ago today, the Dobbs decision was leaked and American braced for a shift that would change the healthcare landscape for the first time in generations. The Virginia Democratic House Caucus released the following statement acknowledging this anniversary:
“When Roe v. Wade was decided, women throughout the country celebrated the end of cruel and unnecessary deaths. Women were able to take control of their bodies and in many cases, doctors were able to save lives. This was a time when many doctors were still asking women if they had their husband’s permission to receive the birth control pill.
In the following 50 years, we’ve seen women make strides in all facets of society. When the Dobbs decision leaked, we knew that it would mean moving backwards – but especially for Black, low-income, and other disenfranchised groups who are often denied healthcare, and would not be able to afford the cost associated with accessing abortion across state lines.
In the time since, we have seen our worst fears come true. We have seen 24 states immediately ban access to abortion, many without any exceptions. We have seen other states implement arbitrary bans, and women travel across the country for life-saving care.
We recognize the critical part Virginia plays in helping those seeking abortion care receive it. We are the last state in the South without a ban, and we intend to preserve all reproductive rights for all those who need them. We defeated MAGA extremists last November and protected these rights this year. We know the assault on these rights is not over and we will continue to fight to expand access to reproductive healthcare in Virginia.”
