RICHMOND, VA – Governor Abigail Spanberger has signed HB1207 patroned by Delegate Briana Sewell into law, establishing statewide Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML). Starting in December 2028, Virginia’s statewide Paid Family and Medical Leave program will ensure workers can care for themselves and their loved ones without sacrificing a paycheck or job security – strengthening both families and the economy.
“Today, Virginia becomes the 15th state, including D.C., to pass a paid family and medical leave law,” said Delegate Briana Sewell, Chief Patron of HB1207. “Paid Family and Medical Leave prevents Virginians from having to make the impossible choice between their livelihoods and loved ones – reflecting the Commonwealth’s values of dignity, fairness, and the belief that everyone deserves support when they need it most.”
